Picking the Best Android Launcher

After buying a new phone or tablet most of us would start installing their favourite apps and then leave their devices as it is; heck not even changing the wallpaper. While some people would first start customizing, modding every nook and cranny inside their devices until satisfied. I for one fall into the latter. Most people think that customizing and modding would be risky and difficult, in fact it’s quite easy one you get the hang of it.

During the next few days, these “series” of articles would help you get started and even become elite modders, perfecting the art of customization in android.

First off let’s start with launchers.

Third-party customizable launchers are one of the best things that has happened to Android. They not only offer custom home-screen grid size but also set gestures for various tasks, scrolling effects etc. Of course I’m not going to get into each and every tiny detail of specific launchers, it’s up to you to pick the one which works best for you.

So here’s a quick run-down of the recommended ones.

Nova Launcher

My current homescreen set-up. There’s no such thing as too much minimalism. ;p

Regarded as the undisputed “King of the Hill” among android launchers, quite evident from the 4.7 star rating and over 5 million downloads! Its UI is quite similar to stock Google launcher but with extra enhancements and features such as transition effects, gestures, drawer layout setting etc. There’s also a pro version giving options to even more settings. It’s a good place to start your modding journey.

Apex Launcher

Its features and functionality are quite similar to Nova launcher having boundless number of customization options. Just like Nova, Apex also supports themes and icon packs. It also has backup/restore option and ability to hide apps from the drawer.

Buzz Launcher

Buzz launcher is quite different from the previous 2 launchers; it not only allows you to add widgets, themes but also set up a pre-built home set-ups on the fly from a plethora of themes. So if you want give your home screen a complete make-over without having to go through the tedious setup yourselves then Buzz will be the perfect choice.

Action Launcher

Although a new comer, Action launcher is among the best launchers available on android. Rather using your device’s buttons to navigate and launch apps, Action uses gesture input. For example swipe from right to left would show Quickpage “dock”, where you can add your favourite app shortcuts and widgets. While swiping from left to right would display Quickdrawer having all your installed applications and widgets.

So that’s our top picks of Android launchers. But that’s only part of the story. Stay tuned for Part 2……..
